Majority Rules

Majority Rules

by E. Amato

Majority Rules is a one-hour drama set in a bleak and very possible future, where youth are indentured caretakers in a society of the aging, who hoard wealth and tech, letting them live decades beyond their natural lifetimes.

Synopsis

Boston, Massachusetts, 2076. Rachel is almost 25 and dreams of freedom. As a ‘Chron,’ she believes her true birth time was the 1950s—over a century ago. All she wants is to run away with her boyfriend Charlie. Far away.

While Rachel dreams, the Elder Council increases the age of majority from 25 to 27. Child-rearing centers are half-empty. A labor shortage looms.

At the historic Green Dragon pub, run by Finn, Minors meet for pints and recreation. Under Finn’s protection, Charlie rebuilds the Resistance. Its first new members are Tim—one of many undocumented people who barter and upcycle to survive—and Jai, a ‘Hybrid’ and trans person forced to identify as male.

Hybrids—like Jai and Rachel’s best friend Kitty—are discovering latent telepathic abilities. Kitty intentionally develops this power and trains as a Resistance fighter in response to abuse they had to endure from their Elders.

Zach is from a venerated and powerful Black family. His wealth and status allow him to serve his own family until he reaches majority, instead, he throws off privilege to experience the injustice of the system firsthand.

A war is beginning – one between the young, impoverished and able, and the old, barely preserved and wealthy.
